Hydrant Flushing

To maintain the high quality of water we provide to you, to remove sediment that naturally accumulates in water pipes, to maintain proper operation of the fire hydrants, and ensure adequate water flow and availability if the need for firefighting arises, beginning Monday, April 12th, the City DPW will begin flushing fire hydrants.  During this process, you may notice slightly yellow, orange, or brown-colored water. If this happens, run the cold water for 3-5 minutes if the water is still discolored, wait 30 minutes and repeat the process. The temporary discoloration in water only affects the appearance - it does not pose a health or safety risk. It is not recommended to do laundry during flushing as the flushed sediment can discolor white or light-colored clothing. Wait until the tap water runs clear then wash a dark load of clothes first. Also, avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear. If you experience discoloration for a prolonged time or if you experience a significant loss of water pressure after hydrant flushing has occurred, please call the DPW at 989-426-6943.
